Last night I received a call from Dennis Shippey's wife Linda.  Dennis was the 2008 Pickle Award winner.  He has been suffering with Alzheimer's Disease for a number of years.  He and I have been going together to Masters and Senior Games swim meets for years and have know each other since our Iowa days as kids. 

 

The bottom line is that Dennis is going through a really rough patch with his health.  He has been in and out of hospitals for the past 6-7 weeks.  At one point he had to be intubated, because he could not breathe for himself.  However, he won that battle and is breathing on his own, but labored.  One of the major problems is that he has an infection that is throughout his body.  He can not sit up or stand at this point.  He is so strong, he keeps fighting through all of this.  Honestly, it is hard to tell what the future holds for Denny or Linda.  She has turned it over to God's will and is vigilantly trying to make Denny as comfortable as possible through his doctors.
